Mother/Daughter Book Club

WAY back in June, I blogged about starting a Mother/Daughter Book Club. As I mentioned in the blog post, this summer my mom and I read The Light Between Oceans by M.L. Stedman.
It. Was. Amazing. I waited until now to blog about it as my own book club chose this book as our September pick and I wanted the opportunity to discuss the book as a group without revealing any spoilers here.

Here is brief summary of the plot and the questions the book forces the reader to ask oneself.

It took me a while to get into this book, and then all of the sudden I couldn't put it down. The book brings up unthinkable moral dilemmas, plays with the reader's emotions, and makes the reader question their idea of what is 'right' and 'wrong'. It takes an amazing author to inspire a reader to question their own morals while reading a piece of fiction. I was continuously putting myself in the shoes of the different characters and empathized with every single one of them at different points throughout the book.

The book is beautifully written. Imagery and symbolism abound on every page. M.L. Stedman weaves words together flawlessly, creating a stunning tapestry that leaves the reader looking back in awe that this is her debut novel. Any subsequent novel that she writes is sure to be highly anticipated.

My mom gave this book a 5/5, I gave it a 4.5/5, and the majority of my book club ladies also gave the book glowing ratings. I highly recommend this novel both for individual consumption and for a book club. It provides great fodder for discussion. Here is a reading group guide for your own book club.

Next up mom and I will be discussing The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd.
